A Haunting Begins

In August 1977, the Hodgson family, single mother Peggy and her four children, were living in a modest council house at 284 Green Street in Enfield, England. Life was ordinary until one night when the children heard strange knocking sounds echoing through their rooms. Furniture began to move on its own, drawers slid open, and a heavy chest of drawers shifted across the floor, defying gravity and Peggy’s attempts to push it back.

Escalation of the Unexplained

The disturbances quickly became more aggressive. Toys were hurled across the room by invisible hands. Knocking noises echoed through the house at all hours. Two of the children, Janet (11) and Margaret (13), appeared to be the focus of the activity, especially Janet, who was reportedly seen levitating, speaking in a deep, guttural voice, and being thrown from her bed by unseen forces.

Investigators Arrive

The strange events caught the attention of the press and the Society for Psychical Research. Paranormal investigators Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair spent over a year documenting the activity, capturing hundreds of incidents, many on audio tape. They claimed to witness objects moving by themselves, chilling knocks, and even Janet speaking in the voice of an elderly man named “Bill,” who claimed to have died in the house.

Who, or What, Was the Poltergeist?

Several theories emerged about the entity’s identity:

The Spirit of “Bill” Wilkins: During a recorded séance-like session, Janet’s voice changed, claiming to be Bill, a man who died in the house years earlier from a brain hemorrhage while sitting in the living room chair.
A Mischievous Poltergeist: In paranormal lore, poltergeists are thought to be chaotic, non-human entities that feed off stress and emotional energy, often targeting adolescents.
Psychic Projection: Some parapsychologists theorized that Janet’s own emotional turmoil manifested as psychokinetic energy, causing the disturbances unconsciously.
A Clever Hoax: Skeptics suggested the children faked much of the activity for attention, pointing to moments when Janet admitted to “playing tricks.” However, even critics concede that some incidents remain difficult to explain.

The Lingering Mystery

By 1979, the disturbances faded, though neighbors and investigators reported strange occurrences for years afterward. The Enfield Poltergeist remains one of the most well-documented hauntings in history, equal parts terrifying and baffling. Whether it was the restless spirit of Bill, a psychic phenomenon, or an elaborate prank, the events at 284 Green Street continue to chill the imagination nearly 50 years later.
